So welcome Michelle and let’s get started with today’s topic of Nature's Gym: The Incredible Impact of Diverse Physical Activities on Your Heart and Soul.
Michelle and I started our conversation with me asking:
Michelle discussed the importance of physical activity in nature for overall well-being. Sharing her personal journey, highlighting her experiences as a gymnast and later, her time at the University of Hawaii, where she immersed herself in outdoor activities.
She emphasized the benefits of moving the body in various ways, especially in nature, and the positive impact it has on physical, mental, and emotional health. Michelle also mentioned the added benefits of human connection and community that come from engaging in these activities with others.
Michelle discussed her experiences with swimming and her preferences for being near the ocean rather than in it. Shared her past fear of the ocean and how she later took up boogie boarding and snorkeling.
She also discussed the benefits of outdoor activities for cardiovascular health and overall well-being, with Michelle noting her recent change in approach due to her diagnosis with aggressive melanoma. Concluded by comparing indoor gym workouts with outdoor activities, acknowledging the unique benefits of each.
Michelle emphasized the importance of exercising regardless of weather conditions or personal preferences. She suggested finding ways to continue moving the body, even if it's just a walk in the park.
Highlighted the benefits of exercising outdoors, such as breathing fresh air and being in nature. Acknowledging that not everyone has access to a beautiful outdoor view, but suggested using technology to simulate a natural environment.
I then asked about common barriers people face when trying to integrate outdoor activities into their lifestyle and how to overcome them.
Michelle advises starting small with outdoor activities and committing to them by scheduling them. She recommends finding personally meaningful reasons to exercise, as something is better than nothing.
For new activities in natures gym, she suggests going with someone experienced, getting proper gear, and researching conditions like altitude. Michelle emphasizes being prepared with water, sunscreen, and the right mindset, as the ocean or mountains can be unforgiving. Encourages trying new things but starting gently and not being too ambitious initially.
Michelle and I discussed the importance of incorporating cardio and strength training into a fitness routine, particularly for individuals with specific health conditions such as high blood pressure.
We emphasized the need for individuals to consult their doctors before starting any exercise program and to start slowly, gradually increasing the intensity of their workouts.
Michelle also stressed the importance of proper posture and alignment during strength training to prevent injuries and effectively target the desired muscle groups. Both of us agreed that investing time and money in working with a professional trainer could be beneficial for individuals who are new to exercise or unsure of how to properly perform exercises.
Michelle and Donna discussed the importance of mindful movement and its impact on cardiovascular health and stress management. Emphasizing the need for individuals to connect with their bodies and be present in the moment during physical activity.
She also suggested that people should start with small, consistent movements rather than trying to change too many habits at once. Highlighting the importance of starting with small steps and enjoying the process. They concluded the conversation by encouraging listeners to embrace movement in all its forms for a healthier, happier life.
Michelle, I thank you so much for sharing such insightful information with our listeners on the diverse ways in which movement can transform our health. As we’ve learned today, whether it's through intense cardio, strengthening of our muscles, engaging in mindful practices like yoga and Tai Chi, or simply enjoying the great outdoors, incorporating various forms of physical activity into our daily lives can lead to profound improvements in our well-being.
Remember, movement is medicine, so let's embrace it in all its forms for a healthier, happier life.
