Claritin and High Blood Pressure Explained

Find out the relationship between Claritin and high blood pressure. Should you be taking Claritin if you have high blood pressure? For those who have HBP, there are a few important things to remember. Most over-the-counter types of medication are not recommended for those who have high blood pressure, because these products tend to stimulate the heart, placing more stress on it and reducing high blood pressure medication effectiveness.

Claritin is a bit different, though. Because Claritin does not have a stimulatory effect on the heart, or on blood pressure, it is relatively safe to use in most people with high blood pressure.

However, the version of the medication called Claritin D does contain ingredients that can cause a spike in blood pressure. This product contains pseudoephedrine. It works as a decongestant. Even those who have controlled blood pressure, due to medication use, should avoid taking Claritin D products.

Claritin products treat allergies and hives. This over the counter medication is safe to use in most people, but you should consult your doctor before taking it if you have high blood pressure or other cardiovascular conditions. Claritin is a non sedating antihistamine. Claritin D, on the other hand, is a stimulate and should be avoided.

Taking Over-the-Counter Medications

Those who have high blood pressure must take measures to protect themselves before taking any type of over the counter medications. This includes medications such as:

  • Non prescription pain medications
  • Cold and cough medications
  • Allergy medications (including over the counter products)

As a person who has high blood pressure, and perhaps has a cold, the best treatments available are those that doctors recommend. Contact your doctor and alert him or her to your symptoms. They can offer you advice on what types of medications you can take, based on the medications you are taking and on your condition.

What's the Problem?

Claritin D is a good example of how medications can interfere with the body. If you have high blood pressure, anything that will stimulate the heart to work harder will increase the amount of pressure in your blood, further pushing your heart. This could do further damage to the arteries. Also, some medications have bad interactions with each other. Although you should check with your doctor about using Claritin and high blood pressure medications together, many people will be able to do so.
