How to Find Generic
High Blood Pressure Medication

Generic high blood pressure medication is available for most common brand name types of medication to treat high blood pressure. Generic medications contain the same composition as that of the brand name. There are no fillers or additives in these medications. However, they're made by a different company. The results they offer are identical to the brand name product, but the name on the bottle is different.

For many people who are dealing with high blood pressure, the cost of medications can be a big problem. Some medications cost $10 or more per pill. However, if you switch to generic high blood pressure medications rather than using the traditional brand names, you could save a substantial amount of money in the process.

Following are some common generic drugs for brand names (this list is not exhaustive) . . .
  • Diuretics: The brand name Hygroton is available as chlorthalidone. Diuril is available as chlorothiazide. Lasix is available as furosemide.

  • Beta Blockers: The brand name Sectral is available as acebutolol, Tenormin is available as atenolol, and Lopressor is available as metoprolo tartrate.

  • Ace Inhibitors: The brand name Lotensin is available as benazepril hydrochloride, Prinivel is available as lisinopril, and Altace is available as ramipril.

  • Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers: The brand name of Atacand is available as candesartan, Cozzar is available as losartin potassium, Diovan is available as valsartan.

  • Calcium Channel Blockers: The brand name Norvasc or Lotrel is available as amlodipine besylate, Cardene SR is available as nicardipine, Vasocor is available as bepridil.

These are just a handful of the medications available to treat hypertension and their generic forms. If you're interested in learning if there's a generic form to your current medication, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Beware of Unapproved Medications

In many instances, people will assume that medications found in the United States are the same as those from other countries.

Generic medications manufactured without FDA approval should never be used to supplement or replace medications required by your doctor. These may have different make ups and fewer guidelines to protect you.

Getting Medication Help

Generic high blood pressure medication can help save your life. Do not forgo taking your medication if you cannot afford it.  Many doctors, hospitals and even the drug companies themselves offer medication options for low cost solutions.
