The mistake you may make is waiting for high blood pressure warning signs to make their presence known. If you may have risk factors for the development of high blood pressure, it is critical that you invest in doctor monitoring or at home monitoring. The warning signs of this deadly condition only occur after years of high blood pressure or when you blood pressure reaches significantly high levels. Luckily, you can be proactive and even avoid some of these risks.

One of the first things to do is to monitor your blood pressure regularly as a younger adult. Schedule and keep routine doctor's appointments. Ask your doctor what your blood pressure is. Keep track of this for each of your annual or semi-annual doctor's visits and notice any changes. This can be an indication of a progressing condition.

Second, if there is any concern that you may have high blood pressure, or that you have a family history of it, invest in a home monitoring device. Some doctors may prescribe a blood pressure device for home use. Otherwise, most drug stores, online retailers and even local health stores carry them. Monitor your blood pressure at the same time daily for the best results.

Rather than waiting for high blood pressure symptoms to occur, make changes in your lifestyle that keeps this condition at bay.

  • Maintain a healthy body weight for your height.

  • Invest at least 30 minutes three to four times per week in continuous exercise of some time.

  • Reduce your sodium intake.

  • Reduce the amount of saturated fat, especially from red meat, in your diet.

  • Stop smoking.

  • Reduce the amount of alcohol you drink.

  • Reduce stress within your life either by removing the stressor or by finding a way to overcome the stress caused.

Each of these tips can help you to improve your lifestyle in such a way as to help you to avoid the onset or worsening of high blood pressure.
