Think about this..water accounts for over half of your body mass.  So a substance that comprises over fifty percent of your unique human organism must surely be an essential requirement for your life.

Water distributes all the nutrients throughout your body, is part of your body's acid-base balance, your hormones and other chemical messengers that moves within and removes the waste products from your cells.

It helps to maintain your body's temperature. So in essence water helps in lowering high blood pressure.

Your Water Hypertension Connection - Sodium

New research states that elevations in your blood pressure are caused by imbalances in sodium and other minerals and not only by excessive intake of sodium.  Let me be clear every cell within your body requires sodium to function properly.

But, sodium also regulates your body's water balance and blood volume.  Sodium is very important to your energy system in every one of your cells.  It gives cells the electrical charge needed for optimal function.

Your cells' electrical activity is linked to how water moves your electrolytic minerals such as sodium and potassium throughout your body.

Now you supply your body with this fluid in a number of ways.

  • Sixty percent from liquid.
  • Thirty percent from the food you eat.
  • Ten percent from cellular metabolism or oxidation.

You also lose water through urination, the lungs and skin.  So given the importance water plays in your body, being adequately hydrated is essential for your health.

Water Hypertension Connection - Dehydration

Chronic dehydration is most times at the root of many of our diseases like high blood pressure and arthritis to name a few.  Given the important role that water plays within your body let me show you how dehydration can wreak havoc on you.

First the best way to remain hydrated is to drink lots of water daily.  I am talking more than eight glasses per day, especially after exercising and during the summer months.

Your body maintains its fluid volume by a system of electrolytic mineral exchange that goes in and out of your body's cells. This mineral is sodium. So when your consumption of water is low your kidneys reabsorb more sodium which then increases the fluid levels in your body.

If your fluid intake is very low your body adjusts to maintain fluid and blood flow.  This decrease in fluid raises your blood pressure and the longer it is dehydrated your organs do not perform optimal leading to the start of medical problems.

Your Optimal Water Intake

To ward off water hypertension connection you must keep track of how much water you are drinking daily.  Most people either ignore their thirst while others are not even aware of being thirsty.

Try to consciously drink eight to ten 8-ounce glasses of water per day.  If you already have high blood pressure you should increase the amount to at least ten  8-ounce glasses of water daily.  It will take some time to adapt to your new drinking level, so start gradually.

To make water more appealing check out my Infused Water page on ideas.  Also when you are drinking water do not simply put the glass or bottle to your mouth and drink.  Take a moment to look at the glass as you slow your breathing down, become aware of your breath and sip the water mindfully.

Breathe in and truly appreciate the healing power of the water and then breathe out and feel your stress or the tension within your body flow out.  In time you will turn every glass of water you drink into a reminder to slow down and appreciate that moment for what it is.

At the same time please do not go overboard with drinking too much water because too much water can stress your kidneys and digestive system.  Hypertension, stress and diabetes has already weakened your kidneys, due to the medications you are taking, so be careful.

And as always please discuss with your physician how you can go about increasing your water intake safely.
